Being Latino and National Hispanic Heritage Month

Being Latino and National Hispanic Heritage Month

I am Colombian, and if someone had asked me a year ago what it means to be Latino, I probably would have felt like the fish in the story that are asked how the water is. Honestly, I would not have had any idea how to answer. However, being part of a multinational company like Streamline and having the fortune to interact with people from all continents, I have come to deeply recognize and appreciate what it truly means to be Latino.

I am beginning to understand that being Latino is not just about where you were born or the language you speak. It is about a set of shared experiences, values, and traditions that bind us and make us unique on the global stage. It is not that these characteristics are exclusive to Latinos, but something in our essence makes these traits shine in a distinct way.

One of the most prominent things is the passion with which we live our lives. Whether in our profession, personal relationships, or how we groove to the rhythm of music, we Latinos have an internal fire that drives us. Speaking of music, it acts as a universal language of friendship for us, building bridges and connections beyond mere words.

Humility, a trait taught to us from an early age, is a constant among Latino nations. This humility is complemented by an insatiable thirst for learning, constant aspiration for personal growth, and significant impact on our society. Perhaps the most emblematic of Latino identity are our family values. The family is the core, the pillar upon which we build our lives, and this unbreakable love and loyalty are reflected in how we relate to others, even beyond our blood ties.

Like many other Latinos around the world this month, I enthusiastically celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month. It is a time to reflect on our rich heritage, honor those who came before us, and recognize the invaluable contributions that Latinos continue to make to global society.

And as Proyecto Uno band says, "¡Mi gente está caliente, latino hasta la muerte!"
